Today (May 25th, 2007) I hiked three hours from Juneau to the base of the Mendenhall Glacier where it goes
into the Lake. There I explored the Ice Caves that are caused from massive amounts of very clear glacier ice and
water from the river. The ice is so clear that in some places you can see frozen pine cones, for example, three
feet in. The ice is about 70 feet thick at the end and the "ceiling" is quite high. As the caves narrow, the color
becomes a deep blue. Below are pictures of me in these caves. The temperature was about 35 to 40 degrees.
